The miles of tracks offer an opportunity to explore some of Dorset's internationally important heathland and its rare wildlife.

The park is dominated by lowland and wet heath, acid grassland and heather, which is broken only by clumps of birch and pine. Some of the rarer species to look out for are Sand Lizards and Smooth Snakes, Dartford Warblers, Woodlarks and Silver-studded Blue butterfly.

It could be a war or a natural disaster on the other side of the world. It could be civil unrest in an authoritarian state or an election rally in an emerging democracy. But it could just as easily be a demonstration that turns violent in your home town, or a train crash, or a gunman on the rampage, a terrorist bomb… You don’t have to travel to find a hostile environment, it can find you, and usually very quickly.

The Guards Museum is an excellent place to take your little (and large!) military buffs, plus anyone who would like to find out about the role of Foot Guards through history.

We are very keen to encourage schools to visit the museum. We have one of the best regimental military museums in the country. Not only can we trace over 360 years of military history but also service to the Sovereign as we have been the royal body-guards to the Sovereign since Charles I reign.

A monument erected in 1656 by Lady Anne Clifford of nearby Brougham Castle, to commemorate her final parting here from her mother. On the low stone beside it, money was given to the poor each anniversary of their parting.

The Brougham Pillar marks the place where Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset, bade farewell to her mother Margaret on 2 April 1616, at the gateway to Brougham Castle.

One of a number of forts built in the 1850s and 1860s to protect Portsmouth and its vital harbour against a French invasion. Largely unaltered, the parade ground, gun ramps and moated keep can all be viewed.

The fort currently stores a treasure trove of objects from English Heritage's extensive reserve collections. Objects on display have been excavated from sites in the South East and South West. They include stonework, textiles, jewellery and furniture from many periods, as well as rarely-seen treasures on tour from stores in the North and East.
