Forest Education Network Event

We have explored many times on HandsamSchoolTripsAdvisor the benefits of outdoor learning. But how much do you know about the outdoors? Those who love teaching amongst the trees now have the opportunity to gain a real knowledge of trees, woods, forests, their ecology and management at a one day national CPD event organised by the Forest Education Network (FEN). Coinciding with the same week as the International Day of Forests, the event will feature three practical workshops to help you to utilise your woodland space for teaching and learning more effectively for all abilities.

FEN promotes the wide range of learning experiences in relation to trees, woods and forests, and is hosted by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom. Promising to put the forestry back into forest education, the FEN conference will allow you to work with national experts to build, improve or even begin to learn about trees and woodland.  There will also be will lots of opportunities to explore the centre, network, share best practice and browse the forest education resources on display.

Delegates will have the chance to take part in 3 workshops during the course of the day:

  • Seeing the Wood and the Trees - the importance of identification and tree health awareness for woodland management

This workshop will take you for a walk in the woods with a spotters hat. You will explore the current apps, online guides and traditional field guides to help you gain confidence in identifying plants and animals and understanding them as indicators of the health, age and status of our woodlands. This workshop will also look at how to gauge the health of trees.

  • Wonderful ways of woodland management that accommodates education

Understanding what trees and the woodland ecosystem need are essential if we are to ‘know’ the importance of multipurpose woodland management. This then enables educators to introduce the young people we work with to the concepts of sustainability and conservation.

  • Resilient woodlands for the future, making the right tree planting choices

This workshop will explore the many reasons for planting trees, explore the expert support tools available to help you choose the right tree for your site and give you hands on practical advice on planting and maintaining the tree.

The event takes place on the 23rd March 2017 at FSC Bishops Wood Centre Crossway Green, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire. A wide range of industry partners, including the Forestry Commission, National Grid, FSC, Woodland Trust are involved and have contributed generously. The cost is only £50 per delegate with all the profits being passed to the Forest Education Network to continue its work promoting forest education and supporting forest educators.
