The Woodland Trust are currently running a fantastic scheme allowing primary schools to apply for free tree packs. There are 3,250 tree packs available to schools and communities for planting in March 2017 thanks to funding from Sainsbury’s, IKEA FAMILY, players of People’s Postcode Lottery and Yorkshire Tea. There are an additional 400,000 trees available over the next four years with thanks to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
If you’re thinking ahead to the new school term already, this is a brilliant learning outside the classroom activity to get your students involved with nature. It gets them outside helping with the planting, whilst learning about the process a tree goes through and playing a part in its development. It is also a great legacy to pass down through the years to future students.
Each pack contains saplings from seeds collected and grown in the UK. Schools are able to decide which pack they want and order up to 420 trees. The trees will be despatched in March when the trees are perfect for planting. Simply complete an application form online before 4pm on 6th January. You must ensure any managers are aware and have approved the project and the legal landowner of the school must have given permission.
