Ahead of Remembrance Sunday, we’ve been seeing many examples of schools paying their respects whilst also getting involved with learning outside the classroom.
In Wales, Miskin Primary and Caegarw Primary launched the local Poppy Appeal back in October with the opening of Mountain Ash Memorial Garden. The opening service involved pupils singing hymns, reciting poems and placing crosses in the grounds of the garden, in the hope that it encourages members of the public to add more items of remembrance. The Head Teacher of Miskin Primary School recognised the importance of relating the study of World War Two to the community that the pupils live in.
This morning on Armistice Day, all 1,414 pupils at Acklam Grange School in Teeside took part in a ceremony to remember those who lost lives in Middlesbrough during the First World War. Pupils planted handmade poppies in turfed flowerbeds in a project that will continue until 2018.
It is deeply touching to see so many pupils getting involved and paying their respects, with schools recognising the importance of relating the curriculum to the community around them and getting pupils learning outside the classroom.
