Sustainability: A Responsibility of the Educator

From the UK government to the United Nations, Greenpeace to the Department for Education, authorities are adamant that our environmental challenges must be addressed through education. It is up to the generations that follow to achieve sustainable food sources, to farm ethically and to curb the damaging effects of global warming; the big questions we are unfortunately exasperating on a daily basis. The ultimate aim is to achieve a school and learning environment that is truly sustainable, in that it perpetuates both positive environmental practices and encourages respect for the wider community and world. But the question of how to teach sustainability, of how to give it cross curricular force is a pertinent one.

Country Classroom is an outdoor education provider which utilise the countryside and farmyard to provide students with unique and valuable learning experiences. Country Classroom’s core themes of food, farming and the natural environment obviously hinge on modern sustainability and its legacy. Through their resources, events and venues they can help you can ask your students key question such as how can we protect our wildlife? And how can we produce enough food ethically for a growing population? Take your students on a Sustainable Schools Day and learn first hand how sustainability influences the world of modern farming.

Recent initiatives by Country Classroom include asking students to think about their breakfast – where did the ingredients come from? A drive to get schools to think about their school food culture, including chats with producers and encouraging schools in London to Sow it! Grow it! Share it! in their own playgrounds.

Country Classroom have outdoor learning spaces and events across the UK.
