The National Centre for Citizenship and the Law (NCCL) recently ran a brand new two hour Law and University Life courtroom workshop for primary school pupils at the Moot Courtroom at the University of Bolton. The aim of the workshop is to develop a deeper understanding of the law and court system and to help pupils to understand ‘British Values’ such as law and democracy. NCCL comments that “visiting this court within the University building provides an important opportunity for children to engage with local higher education institutions and to start thinking about future career choices from a young age”.
The visit runs from 10am-2pm and the two hour courtroom workshop to kick off the day involves exploring the law, the roles in the courtroom and the different courts in law, followed by an engaging interactive role-play activity based on a real trial; a fantastic opportunity for pupils to try out the wig and gowns worn in court! Curriculum links span from PSHE, Citizenship, Careers Enrichments, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC) and British Values.
The Law and University Life workshop is available for primary schools, secondary schools and college students and can include a guided visit of the University of Bolton’s campus led by university staff during the afternoon session. If you want to immerse your pupils into the world of law and justice and encourage them to start thinking about their future, the workshop must be pre-booked by emailing learning@nccl.org.uk. For further information on the workshop, see NCCL’s website or contact kath.downs@nccl.org.uk for specific questions on the content of this workshop.
