Brilliant Residentials

Residentials are brilliant! Schools trips which incorporate an overnight stay are hugely beneficial to students. They have a transformative impact on everybody involved, from students, staff to the wider educational community. Learning Away, an action research programme involving over 60 primary, secondary and special schools found the following inspiring statistics that champion benefits of learning outside the classroom.

82% of primary students said on residentials they try things they wouldn’t have done before.

83% of secondary school children said they are a more confident person because of the residential experience.

72% of primary school children said their behaviour at school was better after the trip.

71% of secondary school children said they felt more strongly motivated to learn after the residential.

75% of primary school children said the trip helped them get on better with other pupils in their class.

84% of secondary school children said that after the residential experience they got on better with their teachers.

Learning Away also discovered that the positive impact of residential is even greater when schools follow 10 guiding principles which can transform residentials into brilliant residentials! These principles are:

  1. Fully integrated with school curriculum
  2. Designed and led by teachers and students
  3. Inclusive and affordable for all
  4. Meets students’ specific learning needs

  6. Part of a progressive programme of experiences
  7. Includes a wide range of new and memorable experiences
  8. Allows  space for developing relationships
  9. Evaluated rigorously
