School Tour of Sri Lanka in Jeopardy Following Terror Attacks

The Rugby squad from Trinity Academy, Edinburgh, was due to fly out to Sri Lanka in June, but following the attacks on a churches and hotels across the country, the tour may have to be cancelled. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all but essential travel to and from the country.

The deadly suicide bombing attacks in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa, killed around 250 people and terrorists are “very likely” to attack again, according to the updated Government advice.

School Trips Axed in Scramble to Save Money

A recent survey of 1678 teachers by The Sutton Trust (an educational charity which aims to improve social mobility), has revealed that 41% of senior leaders in both primary and secondary schools have reduced school trips in an attempt to save money. 45% of classroom teachers have done the same.

Poverty Action Unit Demands Free Trips for Edinburgh Children.

In a report due to be given to the Scottish government in June, there were calls to make school trip travel free on Lothian buses.  The report by Edinburgh’s child poverty action unit includes a list of strategies to reduce the number of children living in poverty, currently standing at 22%.

The cross-party action unit includes teachers, pupil support assistants, mental health and public health experts, housing officials, family support and social workers, as well as young people themselves.

A National Education Union survey has revealed that, in a survey of 1,026  teachers, 40% of them said they were having to provide extra items for children and young people as well as pay for school trips, because of increased poverty.

British schoolgirl assaulted on school trip to Iceland

A viral video shows a black girl being assaulted by a white woman in a corridor.

Police in Iceland are investigating after a British schoolgirl was slapped and chased by a tour guide in a hotel corridor.

The schoolgirl, 13, who attended Harris Girls’ Academy, was assaulted whilst on a school trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. The incident occurred at Hotel Örk, Hveragerdi on 13th October.
