The Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve

One of 13 flagship nature reserves in the area with a beautiful trail that starts in an apple orchard, and passes a brook and a meadow. Lots of wildlife to enjoy, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and otters.

It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus it is open and all year and free to visit!

The trail begins in an apple orchard full of old lichen encrusted trees, which attract nuthatches and woodpeckers, so keep your eyes peeled! Birds such as redwings and fieldfares, plus butterflies like the peacock and red admiral, can be seen during Autumn and Winter, plus a great variety of other wildlife throughout the rest of the year too. There is an observation screen behind Leigh brook in the orchard, which overlooks a bank where you can often find nesting kingfishers.

A number of different habitats make up the trail, which follows the brook through woodland and around meadows that are all bursting with different plants and animals to enjoy, including otters and bats.

A wonderful walk in the great outdoors, whatever the season or weather. Dogs are welcome too, but must be kept on the lead.
