Channel Islands

Channel Islands

Jersey, Guernsey, the Isles of Scilly, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou and Brecqhou (plus many other uninhabited islands or rocks to you and me) make up the Channel Islands. They have a heavy French influence and were the only part of Britain to be invaded by the Nazis during World War II. Visit the German Occupation Museum on Guernsey to find out all about this fascinating period in the islands' history or Jersey Museum or La Hougue Bie museums on Jersey for a wider look at the islands' past. Thus they have a unique heritage to offer, plus miles of rugged coastline and more than their fair share of lighthouses, such as the world's first concrete lighthouse, La Corbiere (above).

They are also an area of outstanding natural beauty and studying wildlife is high on every school trip agenda, especially when visiting the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
