Swindon

Swindon is famous for its links to the Great Western Railway. At the Steam Museum and by riding the Swindon and Cricklade Steam Railway you can give your students a taste of both history and discover the technology and design aspects of this crucial part of the Industrial Revolution. The town also offers theatres, shopping centres and sporting activities such as climbing walls, roller skating, ice skating and leisure centres. Meanwhile down by the football ground there is the (in)famous magic roundabout, while the Museum of Computing makes for an interesting day out for students of science or computing.

The surrounding Wiltshire countryside is filled with ancient burial sites, stone circles such as the world famous Avebury and the famous white horse. In the Cotswolds are beautiful villages and country mansions, such as Dyrham Park and Buscot Park, while Studley Grange is home to a stunning Butterfly Farm and Animal Sanctuary, superb for students of nature and science.

Athelstan Museum

A museum capturing the history of Malmesbury

Malmesbury’s pretty old; archaeological digs have shown there was a Neolithic fort here around 2,500 BC so people have lived here for four and a half thousand years! So Malmesbury may be the oldest town in the country.

It claims as well to be the oldest borough as King Alfred (you know, the king that burnt the cakes) granted a charter to the town in 880 AD.

Rare wildflowers and a myriad of butterflies

A steep-sided dry stream valley on the edge of the Marlborough Downs near Swindon. Valued as flower-rich unimproved chalk grassland and traditional hay meadow. On entering the site visitors will glimpse a small spring fed stream bordered by hedgerow and old willow pollards. The stream separates the main valley from a colourful hay meadow.

World-famous Stone Circle

A world-famous stone circle and on-site museum at the heart of a prehistoric landscape. 

With its huge circular bank and ditch and inner circle of great standing stones, covering an area of over 28 acres, Avebury forms one of the most impressive prehistoric sites in Britain.

Alexander Keiller Museum

One of the most important prehistoric archaeological collections in Britain, housed in the Stables Gallery, and including many artefacts from the World Heritage Site (WHS) monuments. The admission fee includes access to both the Stables and Barn Galleries. The Barn Gallery (belonging to the National Trust) tells the story of the WHS, its monuments, and the people associated with it.

Buscot and Coleshill Estates

The Buscot and Coleshill Estates are traditional estates on the edge of Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.  They are made up of 7,000 acres, three villages, 850 acres of woodlands and 12 let farms.

We offer free visits to NT education group members, free teacher visits, an education officer to assist with planning, education volunteers and a covered area for picnics and lunches.

Sutton Lane Meadows

Traditional hay meadows rich in wild flowers

Three enclosed fields of exceptionally species-rich, unimproved, neutral grassland, managed as traditional hay meadows, near Chippenham. Two are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest and the other is a designated County Wildlife Site.

With its fantastic population of green-winged and southern marsh orchids, Sutton Lane Meadows is one of the best meadow sites in Wiltshire.

White Horse Hill

Ancient rolling downland, home to an enigmatic chalk hill figure

The internationally-renowned Bronze-Age Uffington White Horse can be seen for miles away leaping across the head of a dramatic dry valley in the Ridgeway escarpment.

The horse is only part of the unique complex of ancient remains that are found at White Horse Hill and beyond, spreading out across the high chalk downland.

Wayland's Smithy Chambered Long Barrow

Wayland's Smithy is an atmospheric historic site situated approximately 2km along the Ridgeway from the Uffington White Horse. A Neolithic chambered long barrow, it was once believed to have been the habitation of the Saxon smith-god Wayland.

Corsham Court

Corsham Court is one of England's finest stately homes and is based upon an Elizabethan Manor dating from 1582. The interiors are laid out as a suite of magnificent Georgian Staterooms, the work of leading 18th and 19th Century architects. Their brief was to properly display the famous Methuen/Sanford art collection featuring Old Masters by Van Dyck, Carlo Dolci and Lippi.

Link Leisure Centre Ice Skating

Comprising an ice rink, a 25 metre, deck level, pool, climbing facility, 5-a-side outdoor football pitches with floodlighting and a state of the art gym.

The striking modern structure of the Link Centre houses an ice rink (recognised as a centre of excellence for both figure skating and ice hockey), with penguin skating aids available for kids.

Hatfield Earthworks (Marden Henge)

The Hatfield Earthworks are made primarily of a large, irregular-shaped henge enclosure, surrounded by a ditch and bordered in part by the River Avon. Within this lies a second Neolithic Henge and a monumental mound.

West Kennet Long Barrow, Avebury

One of the largest, most impressive and most accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain. Built in around 3650 BC, it was used for a short time as a burial chamber, nearly 50 people being buried here before the chambers were blocked. Part of the Avebury World Heritage Site.

British schoolgirl assaulted on school trip to Iceland

A viral video shows a black girl being assaulted by a white woman in a corridor.

Police in Iceland are investigating after a British schoolgirl was slapped and chased by a tour guide in a hotel corridor.

The schoolgirl, 13, who attended Harris Girls’ Academy, was assaulted whilst on a school trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. The incident occurred at Hotel Örk, Hveragerdi on 13th October.
