Staffordshire Regiment Museum

The museum tells the story of the famous Staffordshire Regiment and its predecessors while also looking forward to its role in the Mercian Regiment. 300 years of heroic history are shown through exhibits and displays, live interpretation, special exhibitions and a unique full-scale World War I Trench System. The museum is open all year round and runs an extensive event programme.

Follow the story of the Regiment from its raising in Lichfield in 1705 and its early service in the Caribbean through practically every war and campaign fought by Britain up to the present day.

Experience something of the horror of the Western Front by touring our full-scale reconstruction of a First World War trench.

Discover the heroic stories of the 13 Victoria Cross winners. See the pocket Bible that stopped a German bullet and the steel helmet that saved an officer’s life. Carry out research into the lives of the soldiers or aspects of the Regiment’s history in extensive archives.

Education

The Staffordshire Regiment Museum offers a fantastic range of curriculum based visits. Our dedicated team of volunteers can run students through what life was like during one of Victoria’s wars, explain the uses and conditions of life in a first world war trench, or alternatively walk the children through the second world war evacuation scheme.

Remembrance Day

Children look at what happened during the war and some of the consequences. They have time to reflect upon this quietly within the museum.

Second World War: Evacuation

After having the evacuation scheme explained to them children are given ID cards, ration books and labels to fill in. After investigating the gas masks and gas rattle children experience the effects.

Second World War: Soliders uniform and equipment

Children are invited to dress up in the various uniforms. They explore designs, materials and decorations.

Second World War: War on the Home Front

Children learn about how rationing was vital to the war effort and what items were actually allowed in a weekly shop. They also look at unrationed food such as spam.

War Poetry

Children use large exhibition boards to investigate John Masefields work.
