Oakham Castle

The splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is one of the finest examples of late 12th century domestic architecture in England.  Set in a tranquil green open space at the centre of Oakham, step back in time and enjoy this remarkable monument from Norman England.

The Castle has recently been awarded a substantial grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund for restorations and improvements.

Rutland County Museum and Visitor Centre is the perfect introduction to England’s smallest county. The museum displays tell the story of the county, and are complemented by exhibits of archaeology, history and rural life.

This introductory session explores the history and horseshoes of Oakham Castle. The session includes

• an introductory talk,
• an investigative worksheet based around the Great Hall
• followed by a craft activity where children can design their own horseshoe or coat of arms.

The session is suitable for Key Stages 1 & 2 and lasts for around 1.5 hours.
