Abbots View Alpacas

Abbots View Alpacas

A family run farm that offers open farm days, alpaca experiences and birthday parties. Abbots View Alpacas is an excellent place to learn about these inquistive animals and take them for a walk around the farm’s 22 acres.

There are also miniature ponies to meet, plus pigs, ducks, rabbits and guinea pigs.

Open days are held throughout the year and have alpaca or season related craft activities for the kids. Sometimes they also have face painters. There may also be a chance to groom the mini ponies and feed the alpacas but this is on a first come first served basis so that they don’t get overfed.

The experience days allow you to spend some time with the alpacas and have a go at haltering them before you take them for a guided walk. They last between 1 to 2 hours depending on how much you and the kids want to know and see.

The minimum recommended age for this is 8 years and kids under 16 years of age will need to be accompanied by an adult.
Birthday parties are also available with a chance for kids to walk the alpacas and cuddle the guinea pigs and bunnies.

School Visits

We love to welcome visitors to the farm and have two options for school visits:

Option 1

We visit your school with some alpacas (and other small animals if required!) to share with your children. We will explain where alpacas come from, how we look after them and how they grow. They can get their hands on a sheared fleece and feel how soft it is and learn about its hypoallergenic properties and what it’s used for. We will also show them some yarn so they can see how it looks once spun. Included in the package is an alpaca adoption and we will issue the school with an adoption certificate for your alpaca, valid for 1 year. You will also receive photographs throughout the year of your adopted alpaca. We can leave fleece samples for craft activities or a quiz about what we have talked to the children about.  You can select a date for the visit that fits within your school curriculum and don’t have to think about anything else as we will bring everything required with us. We will provide you with a risk assessment before the visit.

Option 2

You bring the children to our farm for a private visit where they can enjoy the countryside and open space. They will have a tour of the farm, feed the alpacas, meet the ponies and they can handle the smaller animals whilst supervised. We have worksheets for younger children (Who lives in which house & Whose feet belong to who). They might plant a seed, make their own alpaca to take home, or sort pictures to explain the process the alpaca fibre goes through before it becomes spun yarn.

We have activities for older children (7+) to understand how our eco farmhouse (which is off grid) relies purely on the sun for our electricity, heating and hot water and experiments to understand rainwater harvesting and solar thermal energy.

The children can search for bugs or bird watch as we are often visited by red kites amongst others and on a farm walk can discover the badger setts and the paths where the foxes and deer frequent. We have cria (baby alpacas) due in May/June so they may be fortunate enough to see a newborn! We have a new barn so have a dry area for children to have their lunch. We have new toilets and hand washing facilities for their use.

We will provide you with a copy of our risk assessment and you would of course be welcome to visit to carry out your own risk assessment, ask any questions and agree a plan and schedule for the day.
