Alton Castle

Alton Castle is a Catholic Education Centre in rural Staffordshire, just up the road from Alton Towers.

Established as a residential youth centre by the Archdiocese of Birmingham, Alton Castle opened in September 1996. It has had a highly successful first 15 years with over 8,000 children visiting the Castle each year, mostly on residential retreats but an increasing number now coming on day retreats.

Many things have changed and evolved over the years at the Castle, and many lives have been touched, either directly or indirectly, however, the one constant throughout this time has been the mission of the Castle: to promote the personal, spiritual and social development of all children and visitors, its employees and volunteers, through prayer and activity in such a way that they may live life to the full and become fully alive in God.

Residential Retreats

The children on retreat participate in a variety of activities during their stay including mountain biking, trekking, archery, and survival. Each activity includes an element of reflection and discussion and prayer, and it is through these activities that each child is challenged and encouraged to find hidden strength, learn new skills, and experience achievement as part of a team and as an individual.

The activities are delivered by a team of young people (aged from 18 years to 22 years old) who are predominantly waiting to go on to university, staying for one year, living and working as part of the Alton Castle Community. This Team brings the Castle and the Programme to life, and act as wonderfully enthusiastic role models for the children on retreat, both from a spiritual point of view and through the energy and enthusiasm they have for life.

Its popularity can be put down to the fact that the Castle is offering a unique experience that meets a real need within schools and community youth groups, the courses offering a real opportunity for personal and spiritual growth, not just among disadvantaged children, but for any group that values this sort of vision.

The first impression is one of awe and wonder and every child regards Alton Castle as an amazing place when they first see its Gothic arches, wonderful stonework and views over the Churnet Valley. It has atmosphere, style, and is evocative of the historic times in which it played a significant part in Staffordshire.

The building can comfortably accommodate 75 young people, plus teachers or adults in dormitory-style bedrooms. It is not purpose built. It is not functional. It is not easy to "maintain", to heat or to find your way around, but it is worth all the trouble because it is an extraordinary place.

The impressive "main" hall is used as the dining area and has a rib vaulted ceiling with stained glass windows and medieval style banqueting tables. There are 4 large meeting rooms, a large fully equipped kitchen, run by an excellent Chef, a games room in the dungeon, a crypt and a tuck shop.

Day Retreats

Day Retreats are popular with schools and other groups from all over the Archdiocese of Birmingham and beyond, with over 2000 adults and children enjoying an Alton Castle experience each year.
