The Bank of England

The Bank of England

The Bank of England offers a wide range of resources and services to build awareness and understanding of its role and functions, and of central banking more generally.

Our Museum explains the Bank’s history since its foundation in 1694 and its work today at the centre of the economy with a combination of interactives, audio-visuals and artefacts. You can also take our 'Walk Through Time' to find out what happened on 27 key dates in the Bank's history and find out why the Bank's nickname is the 'Old Lady of Threadneedle Street'.

A variety of free talks and presentations are on offer to groups of between 15 and 50 people in the Museum’s cinema (booking essential).

For the general public there is information on what the Bank does to keep the financial system stable and inflation low, how quantitative easing works, banknotes and much more, including a public enquiries service.

Educational resources on the role and functions of the Bank are available for all age groups. For young people, there is introductory material on money, prices and the economy. For older students there are more in depth resources, and the annual competition for secondary schools Target 2.0.
