Barnet Museum
Barnet Museum
Barnet Museum is a free local history Museum in North London run by volunteers. The Museum’scollection contains hundreds of artefacts reflecting the history of Barnet and those that have lived there, dating from the Bronze Age to the present day. There is also an extensive archive, and we are a centre for local and family history research.
The Museum focuses on Chipping Barnet, East Barnet, New Barnet, Hadley and the surrounding districts.
The Museum opened in March 1938 to house and make available to the public the growing collection of the Barnet Record Society (now Barnet Museum & Local History Society) which had been founded in 1927 to record and preserve Barnet’s history. The Museum building is an attractive early Georgian house in the heart of Chipping Barnet, and is part of Wood Street conservation area. The Museum is a registered charity (no.295950) and accredited Museum.
Museum quizzes
We have a range of free quizzes for children. As well as doing these, younger children can also look out for the colourful Barnet Museum mice, hiding around the Museum!
Group visits
Group visits for schools (primary or secondary) and other youth organisations are available outside normal opening hours. We offer a quiz sheet for children to fill in during the visit, but can also give talks on specific topics (such as the Battle of Barnet). Visits normally last about 1.5 hours. The size of groups and how many adults per child vary depending on age groups.
Group visits are free, although donations are always welcome.
Project work
We have a large archive of photographs and documents, as well as our permanent displays, that can help pupils with project work. If you would like your pupils to use the museum to help research a project please contact us in advance, so that we can tell you what we have that will be useful and be ready to help the students when they come in.
