Brass Rubbing Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon
Brass Rubbing Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon
Churches throughout England contain Medieval and Tudor brasses illustrating the knights and ladies, scholars, merchants and priests of the past, often laid down as portraits in memory of the dead. They are accurate 'postcards of the past' telling us about social custom, armour, dress, trades, professions and families.
Stratford's Brass Rubbing Centre is ideal for history buffs (including groups and disabled) and allows visitors a unique insight into this fascinating 350 year period of history, with brass facsimiles which can be rubbed according to choice. Friendly instruction and specialist materials are available and visitors can choose between hundreds of brass facsimiles that can be rubbed to create a truly unique souvenir of the visit.
Choices differ between a traditional Celtic design, Henry VIII or even Shakespeare himself. Friendly staff members are at hand to provide specialist instruction and the necessary materials required to create a perfect brass rubbing. The building is accessible to all, as it has no stairs and is wheelchair accessible. The activity is also suitable for those with learning difficulties.
A visit to the Centre will take roughly one hour. It is aimed towards the younger generation, however it offers an interactive and hands-on approach to the history of Stratford and its famous inhabitants that everybody can enjoy.
Entrance to the Brass Rubbing Centre is free; with a small charge per brass rubbing you create that varies depending on the style and complexity. Other keepsakes for sale in the centre include commemorative plaques, stationary, jewellery and a fascinating array of historical gifts.
