Burghley House

Burghley House

Historic - Inspiring - Educational - Great Fun

Welcome to England's Greatest Elizabethan house.

Welcome to Burghley, William Cecil’s ancestral home. This palatial Elizabethan prodigy house is still a much loved family home and we invite you to explore its historic collection of paintings, ceramics and works of art, many of which still stand where they were first recorded in 1688.

Visitors are able to enjoy a guided or self guided tour of Burghley’s 18 dramatic State Rooms, surrounded by ‘Capability’ Brown parkland, at the centre of this working traditional Estate.

We hope that you will visit us in 2015 and enjoy the Burghley experience at this true Treasure House.

Burghley continues to offer groups the opportunity to experience the Cecil family home in the heart of this 13,000 acre working Lincolnshire Estate and we hope the information on the tabs above will help you to plan your visit.

School Visits

Burghley is a unique and richly diverse resource which can be used to inspire learning

Educational opportunities dealing with historical, artistic, performance, literacy, mathematical and scientific themes are available all year round.

Visits can be self-led using free, supporting materials or guided by our experienced house staff and education officer, who delivers many themes in period costume. Schools are encouraged to make their visit in period-style costume if appropriate.

Beyond the main house the extensive parkland, with its ancient deer herd, the delightful thirteen acre Sculpture Garden and the intriguing Garden of Surprises provide further opportunities for creativity and exploration of the natural world.

Educational programmes are devised and coordinated by our Director of Education, Alwyn Pollard, and can be tailor-made to meet a group’s particular requirement and include practical activities where appropriate.

In 2010 Burghley entered the Sandford Education Awards for the first time and was immediately recognised for its excellent education programme. Burghley was found to be perfect for primary school pupils, who will have a day of learning experiences that support the National Curriculum.

The judges found that: “Students will leave this magnificent stately home with a deeper understanding of past lifestyles, particularly in relation to the late Tudor era”
