Durham Wildlife Trust

Durham Wildlife Trust wants to inspire and excite people of all ages in nature and the great outdoors.

We deliver a wide range of outdoor education including habitat studies on our nature reserves, Forest Schools, developing school grounds, creating wildlife documentaries, outdoor art, exploring trees and woodland and learning how to care for our local wildlife. Our education sessions are linked to the national curriculum and tailored to the objectives and requirements of each group.

We also run an exciting marine education program which involves coastal visits, rockpooling and learning to snorkel in a local pool amongst models and props of North Sea wildlife. Whether you are looking for an outdoor adventure at one of our nature reserves; greening-up your local area or investigating the life that shares your school grounds our Education Team would love to hear from you.

Durham Wildlife Trust provides friendly and helpful staff who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about wildlife. Furthermore all our staff are experienced in working with children and young people.

Our nature reserves provide wonderful, wild habitats for young wildlife detectives to immerse themselves in.  Exploring ponds, rockpools, woodlands and meadows in such a hands-on manner is such a valuable part of children’s development and childhood.

Working with schools over the years has shown us that experiences such as these support children gaining a deeper understanding of their topic learning (whether it is science, English, art and design, geography, mathematics, citizenship and PSHE).  In addition they develop many other valuable life skills such a social skills and communication, confidence in an unfamiliar setting, imagination through outdoor exploring and play and many more.

Each session is linked to the national curriculum and often involves cross –curricular activities such as science, art and design, English and geography.  Each session can be tailored to meet specific objectives and requirements for the group.
