Gloucestershire Archives
We gather, keep and share historic archive collections relating to Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire - and local and family history resources relating to Gloucestershire.
The archives are kept at our main Alvin Street site in Gloucester and you can use them in our public research room.
The local and family history resources are spread across Gloucestershire. The core collection is kept at our main site and area-specific collections are kept at Local and Family History Centres based at libraries in Cheltenham, Cinderford, Cirencester, Stroud, Stow and Tewkesbury. You can use them in the relevant venue.
We hold local studies material in seven centres across the county. There is a range of printed and non-printed material in the local studies collections, including books & pamphlets, CD ROMs, films & videos, journals, maps, photographs, postcards and prints as well as sound recordings.
School Visits
We offer a tour of our public research room (where people can look at historic documents) and strongrooms (where our collections are stored in climate controlled conditions).
Tours are open to people of all ages and scheduled as part of our events programme. They are also offered to learning organizations and community groups as a book able visit. Groups can take advantage of an additional document handling session to look at archive material that their members would find interesting.
Visiting school groups can also opt for taught sessions by Archives staff and/or an accompanying tour of Gloucester Rugby Club's Kingsholm stadium, which is within easy walking distance. The joint tour complements our Gloucester Rugby Heritage Learning ZoneOpens new window resources for primary and secondary schools.
