Glyndebourne
Glyndebourne
Glyndebourne is an English country house, the site of an opera house that, since 1934, has been the venue for the annual summer Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
Make an occasion of visiting Glyndebourne and come for the whole afternoon: you can explore the grounds, visit our Archive and Gallery or have a picnic on the lawn.
The Glyndebourne Gardens and Lake
Glyndebourne's gardens are a treat for the senses all year round. Discover more about what's going on in the garden and the people who look after it.
The gardens are open, to ticket holders, from 3pm (2pm on Sundays) for all performances during the Festival and two hours before Tour performances at Glyndebourne.
Glyndebourne encourages you to enjoy the gardens but please be aware that the lake is not fenced and therefore children should be accompanied at all times. Please note that not all areas of the gardens are illuminated after dark.
Art Beyond the Stage
We have curated exhibitions in the Stalls Gallery and in the gardens during the Festival.
The Archive
The Glyndeboure Archive holds a wealth of material for the purposes of research, private study or curiosity.
The Archive is open Monday to Friday by prior appointment only:
- May to August 10.00 to 14.00
- September to April 10.00 to 16.00
Researchers are not allowed personal access to the filing system, but the Archivist will be pleased to discuss individual needs and assemble all relevant material before to any visit.
We do charge for some services, and details are available on request.
Education
Glyndebourne’s widely respected Education Programme, established in 1986, hosts over 230 community and outreach events a year.
The Education department’s remit has always been simple: to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of opera, whether for committed audience member or for opera sceptic. From creating work with schools and youth centres, developing learning resources, and arranging study events and pre-performance talks for audiences, to presenting large-scale community operas on the Glyndebourne stage, each of Glyndebourne Education’s initiatives has a clear aim – for as diverse a group of people as possible to connect with opera.
Current work includes dedicated Performances for Schools, which have become an integral part of the Glyndebourne Tour; Glyndebourne Youth Opera, providing workshops and performance opportunities for local young people; the community-based music and dementia project Raise Your Voice; a programme of work experience placements for local students; and a residency for young artists in partnership with the University of Brighton. Glyndebourne's current Young Composer in Residence is Luke Styles.
"The most imaginative opera-education department in the country"
The Independent
“The work of the Glyndebourne Education department is integral to our commitment to ‘enrich people’s lives through opera’. All the work that they do provides a vital framework for fostering a dynamic relationship between artists and communities, and ensures that the art form continues to have relevance and impact for future generations.”
