The Historic Dockyard, Chatham is a fully accredited museum and partner in Renaissance South East, the South East Museum hub.
We collect, preserve, study and exhibit objects and material connected with the history of:

The Royal Navy’s use of the River Medway and its role in the development of the Medway area
The collections are displayed in our main museum galleries and on board our Three Historic Warships. Our reference collections (archives, printed books and photographs) are available to researchers, by prior appointment, through The Royal Dockyard Library.
Schools
The Historic Dockyard Chatham, home to the Royal Navy for hundreds of years, played a vital role in local, national and international events and in building the Britain we know today. A visit to the site will enhance your pupils’ studies, inspire and fill them with awe.
Self-guided visits include access to the 80 acre site, all galleries and attractions. Explore at your own pace, taking in a visit to our temporary exhibition, going on board the Historic Warships, visiting the Victorian Ropery, enjoying the grounds and gardens or spending time sketching, inspired by the art and architecture of the Dockyard; the possibilities are endless.

As a very large site, we are easily able to accommodate visits by large groups of pupils and are therefore an ideal place to bring a whole year group or Key Stage trip.
Build an itinerary as specific or as cross-curricular as you require, combining historical study, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), Art activities and Literacy work. Whichever of our taught programmes you select, you can be sure it will involve hands-on, skills based learning using our unique collection and environments and will offer your students the opportunity to experience places and activities which they could not do in the classroom.
