Set high on a dramatic escarpment of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, Housesteads Roman Fort is a fascinating tourist attraction in the north east of England. There are some stunning panoramic views to enjoy from the walls of this ancient fortress.
Imagine how life was for the 800 Roman soldiers based here as you wander the remains of the barrack blocks and the commandant’s house. See if you can find some of the oldest toilets you'll ever see and there's a fascinating museum too, complete with a model of how the fort looked in Roman times.
With a history that goes back almost 2,000 years, it offers a unique trip out in Northumberland.

With a history that goes back almost 2,000 years, Housesteads can offer a great insight into what life was like in Roman Britain for an unforgettable learning experience.

Expert-led Discovery Visits
Let us help you inspire your students with our hands-on Discovery Visits, led by one of our experts and great value for up to 30 students. There are two Discovery Visits to choose from:
Facilities for Learning Groups
- The museum at Housesteads houses a new exhibition which explores life the edge of the Roman Empire and this hilltop fortress. Discover and investigate exciting displays and a fascinating collection, but don't forget to keep an eye out for Felix the infantry soldier!
- Parking Coach parking is available 500 metres from the site. A fee is payable. Please note the site is half a mile’s walk from the coach parking on a steep gradient. There is disabled parking available near the fort which can be prearranged by calling the site in advance
- There is a steep climb up to the fort. Walking around the site also requires students to climb steps and slopes; we therefore recommend that students wear suitable footwear to prevent slips and trips
- At least 1 adult for every 6 children up to year 2, and 1 adult to 15 students for all other groups aged under 18. Pupils must be supervised at all times
Booking for learning groups is essential.
