The Little Chapel

The Little Chapel

The Little Chapel is incredibly small. In fact it is only about 4 metres or just under 13ft tall! Amazingly it does actually have two floors, despite the size.

It was built by Brother Déodat, who started work in March 1914. His plan was to create a miniature version of the famous grotto and basilica at Lourdes in France.

Guardianship of the Little Chapel now rests with Blanchelande Girls College which is run by a Charitable Trust.

The Little Chapel is beautifully decorated with seashells, pebbles and colourful pieces of broken china and the College has an ongoing programme of repairs and improvements.

You can go inside, although only in small groups. There is no charge to enter the Chapel. We rely totally on your donations. Please give generously and you will be remembered in our prayers with grateful thanks.

It is definitely worth taking a look at with the kids if you are in the area. It is a wonderful example of a labour of love, as it must have taken ages to collect all the pebbles, broken decorative china and shells which go so well together. The kids will enjoy spotting special pieces of china and shells.

Your visit won’t take too long (unless the kids try to count the shells!) but you can go inside so it is definitely worth taking the time to visit this place if you are already in the area. It is a good opportunity to show the kids something really unique that took time and effort to make. Also, a great photo opportunity!
