Peak Cavern

Peak Cavern

The spectacular entrance is the largest to any cave in Britain. See rope making, the remains of an underground village and find out why it is called "The Devil's Arse"! Guided tours suitable for all ages.

Unusual rock formations, the eerie sound of running water and echoes of a bygone age await you.

Set in the middle of the picturesque Peak District village of Castleton, the approach to Peak Cavern is awe inspiring.

Deep into the cliffs is the Cavern's imposing entrance chamber, within which you will see the remains of an ancient village where a whole community lived and worked making ropes for the local lead mines for more than 400 years.

Deeper into the Cavern you pass through Lumbago walk and enter the Great Cave, see a perpetual cascade of water at Roger Rains' House, pass through Pluto's Dining Room into the Devil's Cellar and hear the source of the river Styx.

Guided tours, including traditional ropemaking demonstrations, last 1 hour. They are fairly undemanding and are suitable for all ages
