Powderham Castle

Powderham Castle

Powderham Castle is located in a unique, picturesque setting just outside Exeter, beside the Exe estuary. Six hundred years of history are contained within the walls of one of England's oldest family homes. Sir Philip Courtenay began building it in 1391 and it has remained in the same family to this day, currently home to the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon.

The magical setting and convenient location makes it the perfect venue for all manner of events including weddings and business functions. For locals and visitors to Devon it is a 'must see' and with its many attractions.

Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone's throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter. The Castle was first opened to visitors in 1959, since then in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories.

Having survived a great deal of damage during the Civil War, the Castle was restored and altered in later centuries. These days, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking Georgian grand staircase and the stunning eighteenth century music room. The original Victorian Kitchen is available for visitors to have a glimpse of life below stairs in the Earl's household and appreciate how the 19th century kitchen would have been run.

Food Festival

Slow-cooked pulled pork, smoked and barbecued Ruby Red beef brisket, this Autumn we will be reveling in all things fiery, smoky; celebrating Devon meat and fish simply cooked.

From fire-pits to charcoal filled wheel barrows, via flaming tandoori ovens, the festival provides a bonanza of barbecued and char-grilled meats including venison from Powderham parkland, mushrooms from the woodlands, fish and shellfish from Exe Estuary, superb grass fed Devon beef and pork from Pipers Farm.  The sparks will fly as our pit-masters cook up a storm. Expect delicious outdoor kitchen fireworks.

There’ll be over 100 food producers exhibiting in the castle and grounds, with fascinating demonstrations, talks and tastings.
