Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum
Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum
Segedunum Roman Fort is the last outpost of Hadrian’s Wall. Home for 300 years to 600 soldiers guarding the furthest reaches of the Empire. Today it has an interactive museum, viewing tower, excavated remains and reconstructions.
The Roman Gallery houses objects which were excavated at the fort. The Strong Place Gallery tells the story of the changes in Wallsend's landscape after the departure of the Romans with the arrival of the mining and shipbuilding industry. Galleries 1, 2 and 3 offer a changing programme of temporary exhibitions - click here to see what's on.
The 35 metre high Viewing Tower gives a bird’s eye view of the site and the surrounding landscape in which Segedunum is set. From here you can see the excavated remains which have been laid out as a second century Roman fort - the only example in the UK.
A reconstructed Bath House with frescoes and reconstructed section of Hadrian’s Wall which sits alongside the original can also be explored.
All school and group visits to Segedunum must be booked in advance. To book please telephone the museum. A confirmation email will be sent to you for you to confirm your booking. An itinerary for your visit will then be drawn up.
