Sidmouth Museum

"Something for everyone of all ages" is the motto of Sidmouth Museum through its interpretation of Natural History and the Jurassic Coast.

This Regency cottage houses permanent exhibitions illustrating the development of the town from fishing village through Regency & Victorian times. Many famous residents and visitors are commemorated. Local lace and a wide collection of photographs are included in this Tardis like small museum. Annual exhibitions celebrate events and anniversaries both locally and national.

WW1 The Domestic Front

A costume display depicting the new and different roles women had during the war. As well as posters from this time and household implements. This is completed by a display of local souvenir items, some of which have kindly been donated/leant to us by local residents.

Sidmouth Long Picture

The original watercolour was painted in 1814 by Hubert Cornish, an Exeter solicitor, for his brother George who was Lord of the Manor of Salcombe Regis. It remained in the Cornish family unti 1971 when it was acquired by the Sid Vale Association - for permanent display in Sidmouth Museum.

Peter Orlando Hutchinson

Sidmouth is fortunate in having its own historian and diarist, Peter Orlando Hutchinson. A Sidmouth resident from 1825 to 1897 who pursued a wide range of interests. His works on geological and archaeological observations remain important.

Sidmouth Lace

This beautiful lace collar was worn by Queen Victoria and is an example of our extensive collection of hand-made lace, widely known as Honiton lace after the nearby town from which the big merchants used to collect their stock.
