St Peter's Pump
St Peter's Pump
In the Six Wells Bottom National Trust Valley, near Stourhead and King Alfred's Tower, stands the impressive Grade I listed St Peter's Pump.
Built in 1474, the pump originally stood near St Peter's Church at the west corner of Peter Street, Bristol and was used by residents as a main water supply.
The pump was moved by an Act of Parliament in 1766 and was sited here by Henry Hoare in 1768. It marks the source of the river Stour, which meanders through Wiltshire and Dorset flowing out into the sea at Christchurch nearly 60 miles away.
It is a fantastic and rare example of such a Mediaeval pump.
