Stainsby Mill
Stainsby Mill
Come and explore how the curious cogs and machinery of a fully operational watermill work in the grounds of Hardwick Hall.
For centuries, the water wheel at Stainsby Mill has ground flour for the Hall and the estate. The wheel is still turning today, fed by the adjoining Miller's pond. Find out more about this fascinating process at Stainsby Mill.
Flour is still regularly ground, by the water wheel, at Stainsby Mill. This is the continuation of a decades long process. The Mill produces both wholemeal and spelt flour, and visitors can pick up a bag at the Mill to take home and bake with. Don't forget to pick up the recipe book.
Situated on the stunning Hardwick estate, the mill offers a vivid evocation of the workplace of a 19th-century miller. Our friendly volunteers are on hand to tell you more about Hardwick's past and present millers and you can even buy bags of freshly milled Stainsby flour.
