Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave Manor

Learn about the remarkable history of the Washington family as our experienced and friendly guides take you on a tour through the history of the Tudor and Georgian house and furnishings. Hear of the events, both fortunate and disastrous, that led George Washington’s ancestor to leave England for a new life abroad.

Visitors to the manor today can sit in the Tudor Great Hall surrounded by history - it appears today much as it would have done when it was completed in the mid sixteenth century and Tudor furnishings fill the room.

The Gardens and Orchard

Sulgrave Manor garden sits within four acres of land and remains true to the original plans of Sir Reginald Blomfield who was entrusted with its design in the 1920s.

School Visits

Specialising in kinaesthetic learning for 4-18 year-olds, school visits to Sulgrave Manor are full of engaging learning activities that include the whole of the class. Our young visitors experience learning through action, including drama, music, games and role-play, all set within an authentic Tudor and Georgian manor house and grounds.

Sulgrave Manor welcomes 200 school groups a year from all over the country as well as the local area.

From the Courtyard a path leads to an open grass area, ideal for picnics, parties and playing. The flower beds are predominantly herbaceous and mixed with varieties of subtle lavender. The formal structure is produced by the yew hedges and topiaries, gifted to the Manor over the years.

A Rose Garden of eight beds, with a central feature of a sundial, dated 1579, is to the east of the House and there is seating in the shady areas for visitors to take their ease.
