Trimontium Museum
Trimontium Museum
Trimontium Fort was the name of the Three Hills Place - in the lee of the Eildon Hills one mile from the town of Melrose beside the village of Newstead in the Scottish Borders.
The Three Hills Roman Heritage Centre housing the Trimontium Museum, is based in The Ormiston, The Square, Melrose and tells the story of A Roman Frontier Post and its People. Located on the ground floor, it has full disabled access to the displays.
A permanent display, originally entitled 'The Trimontium Exhibition', was opened by Andrew L Tulley Esquire, Provost of Ettrick and Lauderdale District Council in July 1991. The £30,000 was raised by the Trimontium Trust which was founded by local people in 1988 to promote interest in the site. An amateur exhibition, put on with the assistance of the National Museums, the Vindolanda Trust and interested individuals ran in the renovated Melrose Station building during the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
Route March
It begins at Leaderfoot and the March ends at Newstead Millennium Milestone followed by a visit to the Museum in Melrose.
You may even learn your first Latin as you march along the Route from Leaderfoot to Newstead. 'Salvete, omnes' 'Hallo, everybody!' 'Salve, kenturio'......
Want to sing? There's a marching song to sing as you 'sin-dex' (left-right) march - available as one of our worksheets.. 'I joined the Roman army and became the Emperor's man'.
