he Nelson Monument was built in memory of Admiral Lord Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Weather permitting, the Trafalgar flag signal 'England expects that every man will do his duty' is still flown on Trafalgar Day (21 October).

Looking like a tall stone telescope, the Nelson Monument contains a time ball which is still dropped at 1 o’clock daily. You get a wonderful view of the City and the sea from the top of the building.

I have been involved with DofE for a long time, first many years ago as a participant, then trainer then assessor and now as an AAP. I hold the NGB awards of summer mountain leader, which lets me take people hillwalking in the UK when there isn`t any snow around, and SPA which covers single pitch rock climbing.

I also teach bushcraft and have led many school expeditions in the developing world. I hold an enhanced DBS and an AALA licence for both hillwalking and rock climbing. I have been on numerous first aid courses and hold a mountain and outdoor first aid certificate.
