British Student Dies During Field Trip in Africa

Caitlin Cole, a York University student, tragically died during a field trip to Tanzania.

The 20 year old student died in Tanzania on September 24, but as yet, the cause of her death is not clear. A coroner in Bradford is looking into evidence to decide if there should be an inquest.

Head of the University of York's biology department, Professor Jennifer Potts said Caitlin was in Northern Tanzania with a group of undergraduate students who were studying tropical ecology and conservation. She added: "Everyone in the Department is deeply saddened by the news of the death of undergraduate student Caitlin Cole. Caitlin came to the University of York in 2017, and from the outset proved herself to be bright and engaged.”

“Caitlin’s passion for conservation and ecology grew and developed during her studies, galvanised by a field trip to Portugal where she was an active and supportive member of the group.”

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with Caitlin's family and friends at this very sad time."

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said its staff were offering support to Caitlin's family, but did not comment on the circumstances surrounding her death.
