School Trip Cancelled Due to Brexit Uncertainty

A school trip to Ypres for students of a Norfolk school has been cancelled due to uncertainty over Brexit.

Students at Aylsham High School make the trip to the Belgian city every year, but parents were informed by an email, that this year’s trip would be cancelled due to the current political upheaval caused by Brexit.

The email reads: “Due to ongoing Brexit uncertainties and related issues with our travel provider we have unfortunately had to take the decision to postpone the trip to Ypres which was scheduled for the start of May. This trip will now take place in the next academic year.”

The worries of Aylsham High School are not unique and are echoed in schools across the country, whose European travel plans are potentially threatened by the eventual outcomes of the Brexit negotiations. Should the UK leave the EU, the Government states that British citizens travelling to the EU after exiting the European Union will need at least 6 months left on their passports when travelling to most EU countries which should be less than 10 years old, even if it has 6 months or more left. The European Commission has confirmed that British travelers will not need visas to visit the European Union on short stays, even if there is a no-deal Brexit.

Mobile phone usage may also be more expensive in the event of a no-deal Brexit and the current European Health Insurance Card will no longer be valid. The Government’s advice for those travelling to EU countries as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, is to buy travel insurance to cover health care "just as you would if visiting a non-EU country".
