Staff who lead trips are urged to heed a near miss warning after a British teenager miraculously survived plunging 1,640ft off a mountain whilst taking a selfie.
The close shave happened when the unnamed 14-year-old was on a school trip in the alpine ski resort of Molltaler Gletscher, Austria during February half-term 2015. The group took a ski-lift up to the top of the 10,242 foot mountain Scharek and, once they reached the summit, decided to take selfies to capture themselves against the stunning views. But as the teen stepped backwards while holding his phone, he slipped on the icy ledge and plummeted 1,640 feet.
Rescuers found the teenager lying on a ledge which had stopped his fall. He was in shock but hadn’t broken any bones.
A hospital spokesman said: ‘He was given a check up and despite a few cuts and bruises he was absolutely fine. It’s a miracle really. He is being kept in for observations and he should be out soon. And I imagine he has got quite an interesting selfie to show off.’
