Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

Claymills Victorian Pumping Station

Visiting the Station in steam will provide a unique and unforgettable learning environment

Historic Victorian industrial building with many rare original engines and boilers. Children’s trail to follow, plus a Visitor Centre and mini museum to explore. Steaming Days held throughout the year.

Claymills Victorian Pumping Station will transport you and the kids more than 120 years into the past, when steam powered engines were being used in all aspects of Victorian life.

Discover how the station was open to improve public health, as most people at the time were still using buckets as their toilet, which was a contributor to the ‘Great Stink’ of Burton in the late 19th century.

The Station is run by friendly and welcoming volunteers, who will provide you and the kids with a really interesting look at engineering, and tell you about the ongoing restoration of the old pumps.

Check online before your visit, as the Station is in Steam several times a year, which is a great opportunity to see the engines in action. Kids (large and small), will love being immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of this steamtastic experience!

The Visitor Centre has a display of artefacts and information about the site and the sewage treatment process, plus there is a “Metals from Stones” exhibition, which has some interesting geological specimens, plus the metals that arose from them, and explains how some metals are produced and used.
