Donna Nook Nature Reserve
Donna Nook Nature Reserve
Visit a thriving colony of grey seals that have been breeding on the Lincolnshire coast since the 1970s. A number of different habitats to explore and plenty of wildlife to discover.
Donna Nook Nature Reserve is one of the best place to see Grey seals (also known as Arctic seals), in the UK. The best time to see them is during November and December, when they give birth to their pups near the sand dunes, an amazing wildlife spectacle, but they can also be spotted at sea or on distant sandbanks throughout the year.
You can also see a good variety of other wildlife, especially birds, in the mixed habitats of dunes, slacks and inter tidal areas.
The lagoons are a great breeding ground for coot, moorhen and little grebe, plus lots of meadow pipit and reed bunting.
Late summer is a good time to see large populations of tern, especially the Sandwich Tern. In winter, sea buckthorn berries attract large numbers of starlings, fieldfare and redwing. You will also see snow bunting at this time.
Over 250 different species of bird have been spotted at this reserve, 47 of which breed there regularly, so this is a twitcher’s paradise as well as a great spot for little nature lovers.
