FSC Preston Montford
Preston Montford has been an FSC Field Centre since 1957. It serves a very diverse range of customers of all ages and levels of learning. It has been accredited with Eco-Centre status.
This delightful Queen Anne country house by the river Severn to the west of Shrewsbury is set in 12 hectares of grassland and woodland. The grounds provide many opportunities for fieldwork within walking distance of the Centre. Further afield within easy reach lie the Welsh and Shropshire Hills with some of the most varied geology in Britain and a wide range of plants and animals. The famous Shropshire meres and mosses are easily accessible for ecological field work. The variety of settlements large and small provide excellent opportunities for geographical fieldwork covering a wide range of topics such as flood management, river development and settlements.
Habitats range from woodlands, heather moorlands and grasslands to nutrient rich meres, upland and ponds and canals. For the geographer, glacial, periglacial and fluvial landforms complement the unique solid geology of the area. Historic settlements such as Shrewsbury and Ludlow, and the new town of Telford are ideal for urban and settlement pattern studies. Ironbridge, 'Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution', is a short distance away.
