Guards Museum

Guards Museum

The Guards Museum is an excellent place to take your little (and large!) military buffs, plus anyone who would like to find out about the role of Foot Guards through history.

We are very keen to encourage schools to visit the museum. We have one of the best regimental military museums in the country. Not only can we trace over 360 years of military history but also service to the Sovereign as we have been the royal body-guards to the Sovereign since Charles I reign.

To this end a number of initiatives have been put into place to make the visit of school children both enjoyable and informative.

There is plenty to see such as collections of uniforms, medals plus numerous photographs. There is a Museum Trail for children of all ages, which has a number of activities to complete as kids explore the museum.

Learn about the five regiments of Her Majesty’s Foot Guards in this great little museum. Museum trail to follow, with hidden objects to find. Lots of medals and uniforms to check out. Free entry for kids under 16.

We also have the facilities for children to have their photographs taken dressed in a real full dress jacket and bearskin and a present day combat helmet (for this the teachers would need to provided the camera).

There are drawings to colour (bring your own pencils or crayons), a questionnaire about objects hidden around the museum, plus missing letters games, which encourage kids to read the captions.

Guided tours are available for an additional charge, lasting about an hour and a half, which cover the history of the Foot Guards from the end of the English Civil War through to the Afghanistan campaign.

Our volunteers and staff are all very friendly and happy to answer any questions that the kids may have.
