Hill Holt Wood

Hill Holt Wood

Hill Holt Wood is a 14 hectare sustainably managed ancient woodland situated on the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire border. It's a wonderful and enriching place to visit with facilities ranging from permaculture gardens, environmental sculpture, woodland walks, computer facilities, workshops and composting loos!

Established in 1995 it now offers an alternative education for children excluded from school, training for the unemployed, courses on countryside management, country and rural crafts, survival and leadership skills and "unusual" methods of construction!

Now running as a social enterprise the woodland employs 22 people including its owners, Karen and Nigel Lowthrop, who live on site in a straw bale house. There are plans for 5 more eco-houses in the wood and a community building which will be completed in autumn 2007.

Hill Holt is increasingly being seen as an example of good practice in community woodland management hosting national events for organisations like the Permaculture Association and beginning to manager other sites in Lincolnshire. It's thoroughly worth a visit and the tea is excellent!
