Physical Education

P.E. teachers spend their working lives taking groups to play matches, participate in athletic competitions, and on outdoor walking and climbing activities. There would appear to be little time for any extra visits, and yet P.E. staff find time to take groups to a variety of venues.

Visits by P.E. and Games teachers are, of course, mainly to sporting venues – either as participants or spectators. Some venues are iconic, such as Wembley, Cardiff Arms Park, Lord's, Twickenham or Old Trafford, but the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum has its adherents, as do the British Golf Museum at St Andrews, the National Football Museum in Manchester and the Olympic Park, London.

But for something a bit different some schools visit the National Clay Shooting Centre at Woking, the National Motorcycle Museum just off junction 6 of the M42, the National Badminton Museum in Milton Keynes, or the Archery Museum at the University of Manchester, or the various sailing centres around our coast.

Offering jaunts down the River Avon either by guided covered group tour, private hire motor boat or a family sized row boat. Departing from the award winning Abbey Park.

Take your pick from a 25 minute trip on the large vessel which visits Evesham Lock and passes Hampton Church; a private hire 4 stroke outboard motor boat; or a row boat, which is suitable for up to 4 people and you are given buoyancy aids and basic instruction.

There is a natural element of weather dependency but not so much with the larger vessel as all the seating is under cover.

The playground was built on waste ground at the end of Romney Avenue in the late 1960s. A local couple helped the local children build dens and swings until two teachers from Lockleaze seniors school, along with pupils, took a petition to Bristol City Council for support. In 1972 John Cleese officially opened the Playground, or as the locals call it, "The Vench". We are an open access playground open to children between the ages of 8 to 19, however children under 8 are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult over the age of 18.
