At least 18 students were killed in a freak accident in Kintampo, Ghana, when a tree fell into a pool at a popular waterfall destination. The large tree fell during a storm onto the people enjoying the waters at the well-known site in the central region of Brong-Ahafo, north of the capital Accra. The site sees hundreds visitors every week, being particularly busy at weekends from sunrise till sunset. It is most popular amongst students, who come from the five surrounding regions on school trips to the site at the centre of the country.
As many as 22 others suffered injuries and were rushed to local hospitals. Rescue teams were forced to cut through the vast branches in the water in an attempt to free those beneath. President Nana Akufo-Addo has tweeted his condolences to the families of the victims. The majority of the dead were students at Wenchi Senior High School, but some tourists are also believed to have been killed.
The incident serves as a reminder of the need to consider carefully activities undertaken at water margins. Consideration of the weather is a key factor, a storm setting makes water but also surrounding areas considerably more dangerous. If you are in doubt as to the weather and safety of your surroundings, do not undertake the activity. See HandsamSchoolTripsAdvisor dedicated page on safety at water margins.
