A school trip in Germany had to be abandoned after the teachers in charge got so drunk that police were called to restore order after one of the school’s staff members got so drunk he fell down hostel stairs and severely injured himself..
The five-day visit to Hamburg was supposed to be a highlight of the school year for the group of 15- and 16-year-olds from the small town of Bramsche in Lower Saxony. But it seems the bright lights may have been too much for the two teachers in charge of the group.
On the group's first evening in the city, police were summoned to the hostel where the group was staying to find both of the teachers severely inebriated. It transpired that they had left their charges to their own devices and settled down to an evening of heavy drinking.
During the course of the night they became so drunk that one of them fell down a staircase and cut his head open – an incident which led to a member of the hostel staff calling an ambulance. Police were called after the teacher then refused to accept medical help.
The school was eventually forced to send another member of staff who happened to be in Hamburg to take over and arrange for the disappointed pupils to be bussed more than 130 miles home.
Parents, meanwhile, were left fuming. The teacher in charge of the trip "committed an incredible breach of trust and sullied the entire senior year for our children," one mother told Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, a local newspaper.
The two drunken teachers were reportedly left to find their own way home from Hamburg.
