With its 3,000 year history, stunning location and panoramic views over the dramatic Yorkshire coastline, Scarborough Castle fully deserves its place as one of the finest tourist attractions in the North. It started life as an Iron Age Fort, was occupied by the Romans, became a Viking settlement and reached its heyday under Henry II.
English Heritage
English Heritage
Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, we are an executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
We are probably best known for looking after the National Heritage Collection of historic sites and monuments and the guardianship of over 500,000 objects.
The historic places in our care span six millennia and include palaces, houses, hill figures, castles, abbeys, industrial sites, Roman forts and even deserted medieval villages. Caring for these places and their collections for the benefit of this and future generations is a cornerstone of everything we do. Our Collection ranges includes Stonehenge and Hadrian's Wall, Charles Darwin's diaries, Queen Victoria's bathing machine, a 1960s nuclear bunker, a vineyard and the Duke of Wellington's boots. Taken together, over 400 properties in our care help to tell the story of England.
