Tolkien Trails
Take the time to follow in the footsteps of author J.R.R. Tolkien, and see the sights that inspired his creation of Middle Earth.
Birmingham:
J.R.R Tolkien spent many years in Birmingham, living in nine homes in the south of Birmingham during his childhood years. He is recorded as saying he drew inspiration for his writing from the people and landscapes of the city and the surrounding countryside, with the Birmingham Tolkien Trail taking you past some of his old houses, through The Shire country park and past the Perrott's Folly and Edgbaston Waterworks Towers - the rumoured inspiration for the famous "Twin Towers" in the "Lord of the Rings" books!

Lancashire:
J.R.R. Tolkien, along with his wife and children, regularly stayed at a guest house in the grounds belonging to Stonyhurst College during the 16 year compilation of the epic "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Tolkien spent much of his time writing, both at the guest house and in the College itself, and a number of names which occur in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ are similar to those found locally, including Shire Lane and the River Shirebourn. The ferry at Hacking Hall (still working when J.R.R. Tolkien was here) may have provided the inspiration for the Buckleberry Ferry in the book, and the view from the fictional Tom Bombadil's house may have been based on the real life scenery around New Lodge.
The Tolkien Trail walk in Lancashire takes you on a tour of these sites and many more, guiding you on a circular path through lush green landscapes, over rivers and through forests, retracing the steps of J.R.R Tolkien himself all those years ago when he walked here.
