Skiing / Snowsports

What is it?

Snowsports are primarily practiced in winter, but modern day artificial snow and indoor controlled environments mean that it can happen practically all year round. As the name suggests, the sport revolves around snow and ice and the different ranges of movement you can execute on them; for example, using skis to glide across the snows surface (something you couldn't do nearly as well without the presence of snow).

What does it involve?

Equipment is almost always involved when practicing snowsports, usually to facilitate movement over the ground. Skiing specifically uses skis (a long, narrow length of solid material) attached to either foot and often poles held in the skiier's hands to assist with movement. The aim of these kinds of sports is usually to complete a set course or achieve a target in the quickest time, but many well-practiced snowsports enthusiasts can perform tricks whilst they move, with ski and snowboard jumping a popular type of competitive sport.

Why do it and what are the benefits?

Snowsports are novel enough in this country that students will get a big thrill out of trying it, and it can be a great way of improving physical coordination and overall bodily strength. Visibly improving in a new skill such as skiing can give children a big confidence boost as well.

What equipment do we need?

As with most activities where you visit an establishment to try it, the venue should provide the majority of the equipment you'll need to participate. You should always check beforehand though, as some places may ask you come dressed appropriately for colder temperatures whereas others may provide the warm clothing.

Who is it suitable for?

Skiing can be taught to pretty much any age group apart from the very young! Indoor ski centres can have a great variety of slopes for people of any experience which may be a good place to go for a group of mixed abilities - as students age they may learn skiing in their own time, so it's a good idea to get a feel of what level the group is at before booking a trip somewhere.

Costs?

The cost of ski trips will vary immensely depending on what type of venue you visit and what sort of tutoring you require - make sure to research what type of session you want to book and compare similar prices to get the best value.

Issues/Things to think about? (unsuitable for age groups, medical conditions etc)

Skiing outdoors can be quite hazardous thanks to the sometimes unpredictable terrain, so you should bear in mind safety equipment should always be worn! Younger children should also always be supervised around snow and snowsport equipment as it will all probably be reasonably foreign to them and their curiosity could end up leading them into an unfortunate situation!

How do we include?

There are many providers that now cater for disabilities in practicing snowsports - this website has some good info, but consult the specific venues in your area to find out more about what they are set up for.

Doing it abroad?

There is much more demand for skiing and snowsports abroad as the UK climate and landscape doesn't support much snow - countries found further north or with a more naturally mountainous terrain will have a bigger demand. Consider your destination carefully and check the venues in the area before you travel if you want to take part in some snowsports!
