Politics

The study of Politics can cover many aspects of personal and social life. The enhancement as a subject will come not only from direct experience of politics at work – through political party meetings, local councils, Parliament and the European Parliament – but also though meeting trade union members and employers on their own ground in factories and other businesses.

Each Parliament or Assembly in the UK can be visited, with all of them having excellent schools visits programmes, while local MPs often will visit schools in order to engage in debates, especially with Sixth Form students.

Visiting government institutions will be high on Politics teachers’ agendas. These can be enhanced by visits to national record offices, like the National Archives at Kew or the National Archives of Scotland.

Chirk Castle

Newry and Mourne Museum

Established in 1986, Newry and Mourne Museum aims to provide a dynamic and inclusive recreational and educational resource reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the local area. The Museum is located at Bagenal's Castle, an early example of a defended residence.

The castle was built in the 16th century in the environs of the site of a 12th century Cistercian abbey. Due to constant adaptation over the centuries, the building's exact location was concealed especially when purchased by Arthur McCann Ltd in 1894 and converted into a bakery.

Rediscovered in 1996, Bagenal's Castle survived enveloped in the premises of the former McCann's Bakery on Abbey Way. The rediscovery has been an exciting opportunity for Newry and Mourne to preserve and restore one of the most important aspects of local heritage. The building is of significant historical interest as original plans and elevations of the building still survive in the National Archives of the United Kingdom. It was also built in the environs of the site of the Newry Cistercian Abbey founded in the 12th Century.

​In the 13th century, Buckland Abbey was home to the Cistercian monks who built the abbey and the incredible Great Barn and farmed the then vast estate.

The Museum opened in 1962 in the old grammar school where Cromwell had been a pupil. After leaving school Cromwell studied briefly at Cambridge before marrying and settling in Huntingdon. He later lived in St Ives and Ely.

British schoolgirl assaulted on school trip to Iceland

A viral video shows a black girl being assaulted by a white woman in a corridor.

Police in Iceland are investigating after a British schoolgirl was slapped and chased by a tour guide in a hotel corridor.

The schoolgirl, 13, who attended Harris Girls’ Academy, was assaulted whilst on a school trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. The incident occurred at Hotel Örk, Hveragerdi on 13th October.
