‘Crime and Justice’ is not so much a school ‘subject’ as a cross-curricular topic, which can fit neatly into a variety of syllabuses at primary and secondary level – History, English, Economics and PSHE come to mind.
Visits to courts by school groups are possible, but usually by prior booking or agreement. The story of the actions taken after an accused’s appearance in court tend to be more juicy, with all the cruelty, sadness and outrage that they created.
The 12th century Clink Museum in Clink Street, London, is a prime venue as it gave its name to all prisons, then there is the Old Bailey, the UK Supreme Court and Manchester's Courts which all offer specific activities and tours for schools. There are many other available prison visits – for example, Butte, Littledean (the Alcatraz of the Forest), Dartmoor, Northampton and Ripon – while The Tower of London still stands pre-eminent as a school venue.

Built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons, Blackness was never destined as a peaceful lordly residence; its enduring roles were those of garrison fortress and state prison.
Highlights
Blackness Castle stands in for Fort William in series one of the TV show Outlander.
This Victorian jail was built by Hansom (famous for the Hansom Cab) in 1829. The gaol features the only original tread wheel in situ in Britain and a gibbet is still fixed to the outer wall.

For curious children, a medieval moated century manor house with a 19th century Catholic chapel, gardens, lakeside walk and nature trail. Tire them out first and there's enough for a couple of hours.

The Old Baptist Chapel is another gem in Tewkesbury’s crown. The chapel, situated on Church Street, started life in the 15th century as a three bay hall house and was later adapted for worship. It is one of the oldest Baptist churches in Britain. The Baptist movement was started by two English men, John Smyth and Thomas Helwys, in Holland in 1609.
